Cine Capitol - Classic Santander cinema

Opened in 1963, Capitol cinema is one of Santander’s classic movie palaces located in the center of the city, near the Alameda de Oviedo boulevard. A fire seriously damaged the film theater and subsequent renovation delayed its re-opening to 1980. Currently it has a 750 seating capacity and is equipped with Dolby Digital sound. The cinema forms part of the Marcos Restegui chain and features box office hits. Check listings for open hours.

Cine Los Ángeles - The oldest cinema in Santander

It is Santander's oldest functioning cinema, having opened in 1957 and located in the heart of the city, near the Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) and the cathedral. Part of the Marcos Restegui cinema chain, the auditorium seats 350 and shows new releases. Cinema Los Angeles is also a repository of the Santander's Filmoteca (film archive), which organizes special cinema festivals. Check listings for open times.
Cines Valle Real - Eight-screen cinema

With a seating capacity of 2,002 seats, this film theater opened in 1995 in the Valle Real shopping center, within Camargo's town limits.

Part of the Coliseo group, all eight screens are equipped with the latest technology and Dolby Digital sound. Ample free parking is also available. New releases are shown between 4 and 10.45pm daily. Tickets can be bought in advance by 902 222 007. Check listings for open hours.

Cinesa Bahía de Santander - The latest in screen technology

Opening in the Baha de Santander shopping center, just off the Bilbao motorway, it has 12 screens each fully equipped with the latest cinema technology and Dolby Digital sound systems. It can accommodate 2,500 persons and its staple fare is recent box office hits. Ample free parking is available. Phone ahead on the numbers mentioned above or reserve tickets through the Web. Multicines Bahía - Santander's first multi-screen

Located southeast of the city, near the Barrio Pesquero (Fishing Quarter), the Multicines Bahia opened in the 1980s and joined the Marcos Restegui chain in 1995.

There are five screens with a combined seating capacity of 1,600 seats, the largest auditorium holding 815. It usually shows commercial films, but occasionally hosts the Filmoteca de Santander (film archives), which programs special film cycles. Check listings for open hours.
Centro Cultural Caja Cantabria - Cultural hub of the city

Also known as "Modesto Tapia," the center is located in the city's busy shopping and service district. The building, designed by the Catalan architect, Domenech i Muntaner, a contemporary of Gaudí, was inaugurated by Alfonso XIII in 1907. Stylistically, it incorporates many Modernist architectural features and was completely re-modeled in 1994.

The Social and Cultural Office of Cantabria Bank is charged with programming a wide and varied schedule of cultural events throughout the year. These include theater and film showings, rock, pop and jazz concerts, conferences, art exhibits and workshops in drama, painting and photography, held at various venues throughout the city.

Admission to art exhibits is free and it is open from 7- 9pm daily.

Centro Cultural Doctor Madrazo - City Council cultural programs

Organized by the Cultural Bureau of Santander’s City Council, it offers a wide variety of artistic and cultural events and it is centrally located, near Tetuán Tunnel, Puerto Chico (Small Port) and the regional government's offices.

The programs include conferences and round table discussions, workshops, and theatrical and musical events. Special events for children often take place on Saturday mornings. The works of national and international artists are also exhibited, with special emphasis on Cantabrian artists, both figurative and abstract. Admission to art exhibits is free with open hours from 9am - 2pm and 4:30 - 9:30pm Mon - Fri; 9am - 2pm Sat.

Palacio de Festivales de Cantabria - Cultural center on the bay

Designed by Javier Sáenz de Oiza and opened in 1991, this palace is a permanent arts venue hosting a variety of events throughout the year, including the Santander's International Festival, plus various classical music concerts, ballet and dance performances. It is also home to Cantabria's School of Dramatic Arts and the film theatre. It is characterized by its groundbreaking design as exemplified by its marble and weathered copper which gives it a blue-green color. The roof is filled with skylights, flooding the interior with natural light. There are two grand halls, the Argenta which can seat 1670 people and the Pereda seating 570. Both are equipped with simultaneous translation booths, large film screens, closed-circuit television and much more. Open hours are from 9:30am - 2pm and 4:30 -7:30pm Mon - Fri.
